Life Above the Dead (WIP) documents the process of executing an architectural project. In the book, the process will be composed in a variety of techniques and forms: text, photographs, collages, drawings and models to tell the story of how design is shaped by pieces. As a book I made as a graduation gift for my 5-year life in architecture school, I wanted to deliver the idea of ‘the journey gives you more than the destination’. Breaking the limitation, attempts in different methods are consistently the inspiration in creative thinking and ability of problem-solving in architecture, as well as in any design field.
The aim of this architectural project is to maximize the potential of urban informality under the big background of social disparity currently in Metro Manila, Philippines. The site, Manila South Cemetery, is identified as one of the ‘urban edges’ with a dramatic contrast between itself and the context, reflecting in both social aspects and urban scales. While maintaining the respect to the dead, the purpose of the project is to introduce new architectural languages to transform the ‘urban edge’ to an active form of urban environment, as well as social relationships. (more details see Degree Project 2017-2018)
The main audience of this book will be architects, sociologists, people who are interested in the relationship between architectural/urban design and social/political issues, plus people who are interested in combining ideas with various creative forms. Potentially, the audience can be everyone as the book is designed as a composition of an architectural design process with various forms with an aesthetic pleasure.
